As we have seen on other pages on this website, neuro-linguistic programming (NLP) offers a variety of powerful techniques for changing a person's identities, values, beliefs and behaviors. With great power, comes great responsibility. All reputable NLP practitioners learn the following rules, and adhere to them when working with clients. These principles are the ethical foundation of NLP practice.
The following 14 principles can be remembered with the above acronym, which also very nicely summarizes the content of those principles. Continue reading for a summarized description of these 14 principles. Also review the Prime Directives of the Subconscious to see how these principles support and strengthen those prime directives.
Respect: Always Respect the other person's model of the world.
Ecology: Behavior and change are to be evaluated in terms of context and Ecology.
Sign: Resistance in a client is a sign of a lack of rapport between the client and practitioner. Another way to describe this is that there are no resistant clients, only inflexible communicators. Effective communicators accept and utilize all communication presented to them.
People: People are not their behaviors. In other words, accept the person, and change the behavor.
Everyone: Everyone is doing the best they can with the resources they have available. In other words, Behavior is adaptable, and the current behavior is the best choice available. Every behavior is motivated by a positive intent.
Calibrate: Calibrate on behavior. The most important information about a person is that person's behavior.
Territory: The map is not the Territory. The thoughts we have and the words we use are NOT the event or the item they represent.
(U) You are in charge of your mind, and therefore you are in charge of your results.
Resources: People have all the resources they need to succeed and to achieve their desired outcomes. There are no unresourcesful people, only unresourceful mental states.
Wholeness: All procedures should increase a client's Wholeness.
Only: There is no failure; Only feedback!
Response: The meaning of communication is the Response that you get.
Law: The Law of Requisite Variety means that the system or person with the most behavioral flexibility controls the system.
Designed: All procedures should be Designed to increase choice.
If you ever have questions or concerns about your NLP practitioner's approach or suggestions, it is your right and your responsibility to address those concerns with your practitioner. The very best results stem from a true client: practitioner partnership, which in turn depends upon clear communication and cooperation between the two.
