Hello, and welcome to this website!  My name is Kathryn Kerby, and I'm a licensed hypnotherapist with a practice in western Washington state, just north of Seattle.  When I'm not working with clients, I'm usually out working in my garden or with our livestock, participating in a variety of sports, working on one of my hobbies, or curled up with a good book.

My coaching practice is based upon three different but complementary mental health specialties:

  • hypnosis
  • neuro-linguistic programming (NLP)
  • CORE success coaching

But what are these specialties, really?

What is Hypnosis

Most people have at least heard of hypnosis, but many people don't really understand what it can and cannot do.  So let's do a little bit of mythbusting to set the record straight.  Hypnosis is the process of bringing a person to that midway point between being fully awake and fast asleep.  That's the "Goldilocks point" where you have easy access to both the conscious and subconscious mind.  Have you ever had wonderfully creative or insightful thoughts just as you were nodding off to sleep?  That was because you were at that point between consciousness and sleep. For most people, that point comes and goes very quickly, and they can't easily access it.  Hypnosis simply makes it easier to access that mental state, and hold it for longer periods of time.  If that sounds like a very natural process, it is.  It is also extremely powerful once you learn how to work with it.  The good news is, a person's mind has multiple safeguards to make sure hypnosis can't be used against them.  So all those Hollywood storylines about people being programmed against their will is about as realistic as The Wizard Of Oz.  To learn more about hypnosis, and to learn what it can and cannot do, check out my Hypnotherapy FAQs page.

What is Neuro Linguistic Programming?

What in the world is NLP?  The principles of NLP are based on the research work done by psychologist Richard Bandler and linguist John Grinder several decades ago. They began to study how some people use certain language phrases in very specific ways, to isolate and change subconscious assumptions, expectations and limiting behaviors.  These language patterns can be used in a clinical setting, for instance as part of a medical or psychological therapeutic practice, or within our own minds, for instance during meditation sessions or while listening to audiotapes while relaxing.  Regardless of how and when any given person uses these language patterns, these patterns can help people change their innermost subconscious patterns, and move beyond their limiting beliefs to achieve their goals. For more information about NLP, check out my NLP FAQs page.

What is Success Coaching?

And what is Success Coaching?  This set of principles and techniques is based upon the collective observations about how people either reach, or fail to reach, their goals in personal and professional life.  It turns out that success is NOT due to luck, or inheritance, or other external circumstances.  Instead, consistent success is due to a set of mental expectations and behavioral practices which, like NLP, can be taught to anyone.  Contrary to what many people believe, success can be achieved by anyone who knows these practices and is willing to use them.  To be clear, coaching is NOT simply telling another person what to do.  Instead, the best coaches know which questions to ask a client, in order to help that client determine the next steps to take.  To learn more about this topic, check out my Coaching FAQs page.

Why Hire A Success Coach?

So why hire a success coach?  We all know people who have succeeded in their personal or professional goals almost entirely by accident.  They stumble upon these techniques and practices simply by observing how others succeed, and then duplicate those efforts.  It’s easy to think “I’ll just do whatever they did” or “They figured it out, and so can I”.  However, this approach is relatively limited because what works for one person doesn’t always work for another.  The reason is simple: even when two people have the same goal, they will have different sets of assumptions, expectations, life experiences, strengths and weaknesses. So if one person simply follows another person’s example, that “recipe” won’t take into account the second person’s unique combination of assumptions, expectations, etc.  So that second person gets different results.  Usually, those results are very different from what a person hoped for.  A qualified success coach, on the other hand, understands the proven techniques and practices to identify any given client’s internal obstacles, and then help that client through those obstacles.  For more information, check out my Working With A Success Coach page.

In my own life, I have hit a lot of obstacles in both my personal and professional life.  For many years, I did what almost everyone else did - I blamed other people, I blamed the economy, I blamed government regulations, I blamed anyone and anything I could think of.  Truth be told, I was getting in my own way.  My own life events, combined with a large dose of unconscious assumptions, expectations and more than a few fears, almost ensured that I would repeatedly fail.  For a while I thought that was simply my fate.  Thankfully, I wasn't content with that idea, and I started looking for ways to succeed.  I started learning about the principles and practices described above, and I started applying them in my life.

Looking back I didn't actually expect those techniques to work, but to my amazement, they did.  After achieving many of my own goals, I wanted to help other people achieve theirs.
