NLP Prime Directives

Contrary to Hollywood movies about mind control and related storylines, the mind actually has a number of defenses to protect it.  Any form of therapy, coaching or counseling must respect and support these defenses in order to make progress with any given client, while also protecting the client from unintended changes.

Sometimes a client will come forward with a request to change some aspect of his or her identity, values, beliefs, potential and/or behaviors, which violate one or more of the following rules.  All ethical NLP practitioners will need to caution the client about how the client's request is in violation of these rules, and how those violations could set in motion unintended changes.  Happily, NLP practitioners and clients can usually find an alternative set of changes which both preserve the following rules, and support the client's goals.  The ultimate goal with any given session, with any given client, is alignment.  Alignment with that person's entire suite of mental levels, mental, physical, psychological and spiritual well-being, along with that person's past, present and future, that person's community and that person's world.  Bottom line, the goal of any change to the subconscious, or via the subconscious, is preservation of and health for all these different aspects of a healthy life.  Violation of one, is damaging to all.

If you ever have questions about whether a desired change is consistent with these prime directives. discuss your concerns with your NLP practitioner.

The 20 Rules of the Subconscious

Preserves the Body: The first task of the subconscious is to protect the self.

Runs the Body: The subconscious has a blueprint of the body as it is now, and of the body in perfect health.

Stores Memories: Both temporal (in relationship to time) and atemporal (not in relationship to time)

Is the domain of the emotions.

Organizes all memories: Uses a Gestalt on the timeline.

Represses memories with unresolved negative emotions.

Presents repressed memories for resolution, to release emotions.

Is symbolic; uses and responds to symbols.

Takes everything personallythe basis of Perception is Projection.

Works on the Principle of Lease effort: it takes the path of least resistance.

Does not process Negatives: when choosing a goal or outcome, that outcome must be expressed in positive terms, rather than negative terms (ie, "I want X", versus "I don't want Y."  The former will be an effective outcome, while the latter will fail).

May keep the repressed emotions repressed indefinitely for self-protection.

Is a highly moral part of you, per the morals taught and accepted as a child.

Enjoys serving, and needs clear orders to follow.

Controls and maintains all perceptions: both regular and telepathic, and transmits them to the conscious mind.

Generates, stores, distributes and transmits all energy.

Maintains instincts and generates habits.

Needs repetition until a habit is installed; the more rapid the repetition, the better.

Is programmed to continually seek more and more: there is always more to discover.

Functions best as a whole integrated unit: does not need parts to function.

A Rich Inner Life, and A Large Responsibility

The above rules are front and center of any reputable NLP Practitioner's work with every single client.  Each of these elements has the capacity to enrich our lives when we make changes which are consistent with all of them.  They also demand respect in terms of HOW we make those changes.

This is a huge topic, and it will take time to explore all these facets. We'll continue to explore them over time, with additional pages and discussion. As I expand on these topics, I'll include links to each new page in the relevant section(s) above.  Check back here for those updates.  I'll also include updates in the Latest News panel on the left of each page.

In the meantime, consider this a page both a placeholder and a reminder that the subconscious isn't just some playground for our entertainment.  We don't get to make whatever changes sound good in the moment.  Whenever we start to consider making changes to our subconscious, we must keep ALL  the above rules and functions first and foremost in our plans, goals, NLP techniques and hypnotherapy.  That is the surest road to long-term health, success and happiness.  Not because I say so, but because that's the way the subconscious works.
